That does look like a bud Jenny, could be a bud on that bottom most one?

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

  • @JennyJ @Lyn I think that must have been a trick of the light in the photo. I have had a look today and there are no buds showing. I have taken one out and attached a photo of the bulb. I hope this helps.

If you crush a leaf between your fingers, is there any smell? I'm wondering if it's an allium of some sort. If it is, there'll be an oniony smell. It doesn't look like the bluebells in my garden but could perhaps be something related like scilla?
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
  • There isn't an oniony smell. As I haven't planted any bulbs I guess it will be a surprise to see what, if anything, emerges between the leaves in the upcoming weeks
  • My money’s on bluebells.  I recognise the bulb from having to dig up dozens from the “wrong” part of the garden !

My money's on bluebells also.  But they don't suddenly get to this size.  You must have noticed something in this spot in other years.

Is it Spanish Bluebell time yet,  I know their leaves are out before the English ones.
I’ll still stick with my first though,  they’re not English bluebells.

  • I did wonder if it was too soon to see Bluebells. Could be Spanish as they are more vigorous.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
  • @bede I have never had anything appear before, hence my query to the forum.
