I think you're right to look at something else. Tess hasn't been that vigorous for me so far and its blooms weren't really red, more pink, in my sunny garden. I just planted a red climber called Grand Award bred by Poulsen to try instead because I did want a more reddish rose for that spot.
Also non-DA, climbing Arthur Bell (yellow) and Boule de Neige (white) have grown quite fast for me, the former in a mostly shady spot.
