There are no signs of daffs or snowdrops yet! Is this to be expected?

Yes - we had all that too @Simone_in_Wiltshire, but in between that, it's been what I'd call mild. Hardly any snow too, although more icy conditions than normal, due to wet then freeze. Maybe others wouldn't see it as mild though! I much prefer cold frosty weather, even when it's well below minus fives and sixes, rather than wet, windy cold, but it's par for the course here so I'm used to it.

It's been a pattern generally up here though. Further north, the ski season has been affected again -loads of snow then a mild spell removing a lot of it,  and the avalanche recorders are very concerned about this too. Cold then mild is very dangerous as the snow doesn't get a chance to laminate properly.

When my mother lived in Minehead in Somerset we always used to visit  on December 28th. There was a 'boat' on the roundabout outside the town which was always full of Daffodils in flower. I wonder if it is still there?

As it was Somerset @Palustris - maybe someone will have nicked the boat during the floods... ;)

  • On a related note should I be seeing any signs of allium bulbs planted in early- mid November yet? The same bed has Dutch Master Daffs planted at the same time 3/4/5 inches tall. The alliums are Purple Sensation and Everest.

Loads of different bulbs showing, but only snowdrops in flower.

My daffs & I think a few narcissus (narcissi?) have been coming up for a few weeks, I've no idea what they are because they've always been here, but they flower in Feb.

Some alliums start into growth early @ciaranmcgrenera, well before the flower spikes, especially the little drumstick ones - A. sphaerocephalon, so yours will probably be a little while yet to show through.
Some of them can be hit and miss too, in terms of soil and drainage etc.  Purple Sensation is about May/June  in flowering here from what I can remember, but it may be different where you are. I think Everest is summer flowering - most alliums are summer into autumn flowering, so a good bit later than daffs  :)

Just had a look around and Everest seems to be late spring early summer, so they might be just after P. Sensation, or around a similar time. Depends on location of course. We're later with all these things here.

Pretty sure it was still there a couple of years ago @Palustris.  It was always one of the best kept roundabouts on that road.  Minehead itself has grown tho - I used to live in Old Cleeve and went into Minehead regularly for volunteer work in the early 2000's.  I almost didn't recognise the place when I last went thru the town

Funny enough my parents lived in Blue Anchor which is very close to Old Cleeve. We often wondered which variety of Daff it was.
