The mesh may not stop them - I've got very fine plastic mesh over a water butt, and have found leopard slugs stuck in it a few times - the birds dropped them there, they can't get out once they squeeze themselves half way through.

. I'll look forward to stuck slugs then! But I suppose if they do get stuck at least it means they've not got through.

In West Green House gardens they have a mass of healthy hosta on islands in a pond. Apparently slugs don't swim.
