I used to work at a library for some years. At some time, I had the (silly) idea to work for a Kindergarten. I resigned, last day was a Friday and I left very healthy the library. I started working the following Monday. By Tuesday, I felt so awful, that I had to stay at home. By Wednesday, I had to go to a doctor with the feeling that my head had turned into something really terrible. He confirmed that I had caught all bugs and viruses from the kids in my group that were possible and some he didn't know that they exist. I was sent on sick leave and needed special treatment where I had to go to the surgery every second day. I resigned from the Kindergarten and my contract ended after 10 working days. I asked my library if I could come back. They were happy (the manager, "Simone, I have to hug you") and accepted without hesitation that I needed another week on sick leave. I have never felt so ill in my entire life as in these 3 weeks. Just 1 day, and the kids literally sent me to hell. I was 24 when this happened and used to contacts, but a Kindergarten is like Wuhan Laboratory.
Since then, I only meet the kinds in my family outside if I'm back home. I have no hesitation to tell the truth that my environment simply doesn't offer the stress test.
As we age we need to take care of ourselves to maintain health and vigour - both essential ingredients for our own comfort as well as family. The first thing to do is to reduce the number of visits of small children and refuse to have them if they have any colds or sniffles or tummy bugs.
The second is to take steps to boost their own immune system so they need to eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables especially brassicas, garlic and nuts plus complex rather than refined carbohydrates so wholemeal bread and pasta rather than white.
Supplements of zinc, selenium and vitamin D will help as will starting the day with a glass of water containing the juice of half a lemon, a similar quantity of cider vinegar and honey, if needed, to sweeten it.

It's very strange, but I haven't had a cold or anything for over 15 years, can't remember the actual time. Don't appear to have had Covid, unless asymptomatic , have never had a positive test. For 30 years I worked nights, nursing homes, hospitals full of germs, maximum of 3 hours sleep, after a shift. Don't sleep much now. Just before Christmas, saw daughter, grandkids, they went down with Covid.... me, nope. Grandaughter stayed, stinking cold,cough... me, nope. I've got some health issues. When I started the covidence study getting on for 2 years ago, filled in the health forms,I'm either 18,or have a superhuman immune system. My husband who was whipped into hospital early November, with central chest pain, received a letter from the surgery today, saying it needs following up,ring the surgery or visit reception. He went Thursday for bloods, previous week,BP check, ring huh! After the hospital discharge he got a phone appointment with GP,mid January.
We live a couple of hours away from the grandchildren, and thankfully, son is very good at deferring planned visits if anyone has been unwell. I think I’m always surprised when we get treated as potentially vulnerable elderly! I still automatically assume I’m the adult and will be doing the looking after, while son is arguing with me that he needs to be helping out with the heavy jobs! I might be in my seventies, but I haven’t yet made the mental transition to being on the receiving end.
Found the ECG this morning,it was actually October when hubby got packed off to hospital with central chest pain. First appointment with GP was mid January,AND by phone. Getting a letter yesterday from the surgery saying please make an appointment,is an absolute joke. Definitely know that left hand is actually completely unaware of the existing right one!!!
We had our g'daughters after school practically every day when they were smaller and I was so pleased to be able to spend so much time with them, as, having moved here from Spain it was a treat to see them so often. Yes, we did get their colds but the worst was when, at primary school, there was an outbreak of nits and we got those too - more than once!
Ladies at patchwork also tend to get local gkids after school and others for every school hoilday. A couple go off to paris ot other big towns to do the school hols shift. Exhausting but fun for the most part altho one or two have now had Covid a couple of times and get all the colds and tummy bugs too. Not good when you're heading into your 70s and have lost your OH already or have your won health issues.
