What are these ? I think the first one is a Rowan. I have no idea what the second one is.

Just 2 more to ID to round off the day if you could. Thanks.

The first is a hawthorn, the second I don't know, I'd guess a dwarf cultivar of maybe Monterey cypress but could be a Hebe or something else completely.

    1. Without flowers it is hard, but it might be Crataegus laevigata Pauls Scarlet
...a hawthorn tree,  with double red flowers.

    2. Not sure.????

    2. ?

Does the bottom one have a lemony scent to it when you brush the leaves @JAYJARDIN?

In a new-to-you established garden, it's a good idea just to observe for the first 12 months.

Repeat your enquiries with new pics when your plants are flowering.

Hawthorn, and might the other be a heather?
location: Surrey Hills, England, ex-woodland acidic sand.

I wondered if the second one could be a tree heather (Erica arborea).
  • @Uff- Yes the bottom one does have a lemony scent.

@"bédé"  I need to remodel the garden as quickly as possible as it is really a mess. I have lots of plants that I brought with me from my previous home and they are in pots and have been like that since January so I am anxious to get the garden done and plant them out as early as the weather allows in Spring, so I need to decide what to keep and what to remove before I have the garden transformed into something that actually looks like a garden and not a mess off falling down raised planters and wrongly placed plants.
I knew it would be hard to get plants identified at this time of year due to lack of leaves and flowers, but if I can get an idea of what is here that would be an amazing help.

I'd agree with Hawthorn for the tree [it's certainly  not a rowan] and the one @Silver surfer mentions is probably the most common one, so it's a likely choice.  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

If it is Paul's Scarlet, one way to identify is that it has quite vicious thorns along the stems

I thought the bottom one was a conifer of some sort but zooming in I think it might be Erica but not sure which one. I don't think it's tree heather because they are more upright with branching stems and can grow quite tall. This one is more spreading.
I'm only thinking at this point though.
