Never seen a cabbage tree in the UK before (the top plant). They are self-seeding pests where I come from.
  • No it's nothing like Silver Surfer's photo, the stems are thick and fleshy as if it is a kind of succulent. I'll photo the stems tomorrow.

Thanks for the Cordyline ID, I hope it doesn't grow to 66foot as per specs I have seen and it definitely won't self-seed here as it's not warm enough !

Common name is Torbay palm as they are so common on the South coast.
A few years ago many in the gardens of Wales and England died when we had a very cold winter.

    1. Taken Manningtree, Essex.

    2. Taken  Oban. West Coast Scotland.

I had one in my garden, it was the Winter of 2010 that did for a lot of them. Mine survived but was never the same, and after a couple of years l took it out.

They're very common place here, people buy them as bedding plants for a few quid, you put them in the middle of your front garden lawn surrounded by begonias / pelargoniums etc. You see lots that have survived to become substantial specimens.

Take a look at Spurge Laurel, Daphne Laureola. The leaves look leathery to me.

That plant looks like a sedum & nothing like your original photo. Have you got two plants confused by any chance?
