Austin Bare Roots

Alfie_Alfie_ Posts: 456
Hi guys,

Never had any bare roots before but my four Austin bare roots I received today have very varied stems. Gabriel oak one doesn’t look great but maybe it’s just me. Here is the Woolerton Old Hall which looks really good:

This is the Gabriel Oak:

Why are the stems so brown? Here is a close up of one of the stems where you can see a patch of green on it:

I suppose it must be ok as you can see a bud on the brown part. I get they are different species but I have 20 odd roses in my garden and none of them have brown stems (unless they are in the brown garden bin 😂)

    Hi @Alfie_

Just a suggestion. You might get more responses if you re-post on the main ROSES Autumn/Winter 2022 thread.

Your bare roots look okay to me and yes, they do all vary from different suppliers and the roses themselves.

Ah your stems are brown/purple too. Nice blooms! How do you rate Gabriel Oak?

Your GO bare root is perfectly fine so you can go ahead and plant it. Your roses are covered by their 5 year guarantee so if it fails to grow just contact them and they will replace it.

@Alfie_ fragrant, blooms in flushes, nice colour (might have a halo effect in summer) and stays compact.. but thorny.. I love GO..

Great thanks. Yeh that’s why I went for it as so many great comments when it’s reviewed. The only thing a few people said was it can be top heavy and struggle to support itself so can need staking.

May I ask where you get your pots? The one GO is in and the one next to it look lovely.

They look good to me I love bare root roses. I am lucky enough to live not far from DA. A wonderful day out.
I would say give them a good soak before planting 12-24 hours

My Gabriel Oak is upright and probably my only David Austin rose apart from Emily Bronte that doesn't need any support. Good in the baking sun of the drought, good in the rain and cold. It's gone a lovely darker, richer colour this autumn.

I rate it 9/10! Drops a point because the ants here make a beeline (ant line?) for it, and the scent is not to everyone's taste.
