I’ve no reason to have a private profile, as I try only to post information that hopefully can’t be used to identify me to all and sundry. I have only used the ignore button three or four times, and do find it very useful. Luckily the people I have ignored haven’t had private profiles 1) I didn’t realise that would stop me from ignoring them, and 2) before pressing the ignore button, I usually read back through some of their posts to double check that I’m not unfairly judging them on a single ‘off’ comment, if they were maybe having a bad day, or I interpreted the post in a way they might not have intended. Those I’ve ignored are those that repeatedly reply to other posters in a dismissive or less than pleasant manner, or display interests and habits that I find deplorable.
No need for that, this is supposed to be a supportive and informative forum. If a casual acquaintance spoke to me or in front of me, in the manner that some posters write, I certainly wouldn’t be mixing with them in the future, and the ignore button comes in very handy. I am not going to value their contribution, and I can pretend they don’t exist! The option to ignore should be applicable to any forum member. So far, I’ve only noticed private profiles attached to obvious spammers. They tend to only post once, so ignoring them probably won’t help. They come back under a new profile anyway.
Hi @coccinella It seems that your profile is Private. This means we can't send you a Private Message or look up your earlier threads and posts.
If you want to change it, just click on the cog wheel to the far right of your name in the top righthand corner of this page. You then click on Edit Profile, and un-check the box to keep the profile private. Don't worry, your email address will not be revealed by doing this. Only you can see it.
If you want to Ignore all posts by an individual poster you need to click on their name ... you'll then see the option to Message them, and next to that is a little purple 'head and shoulders' ... click on that and you can then click on Ignore.

So looks like I've not done the private thing by mistake.
I'm happy with that.
