  • This forum is a wonderful place. 😊

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • I'd never be without carrots but if I never ate a parsnip again I doubt I'll feel as though I've missed out...they're a non descript veg IMHO.

I think you'll find yourself in the minority there. Root veg is the most popular with most people and carrots and parsnips being quite close to one another.
  • Parsnips 🤢 you are not alone Chris.
  • Love parsnips here, roasted buttery parsnips … creamy spiced parsnip soup … 😋

I love them [parsnips] too, especially roasted, but no one else in the house does, so I never buy them, and it certainly isn't worth growing them. In my experience, they're a bit of a Marmite veg. When I used to have everyone over at Christmas, only about 3 of us, out of around 12, liked them. No one else I know cares for them either. I don't often make soup with them though - bit windy.... :D
Couldn't live without carrots. I'd need to grow nothing else in the garden though, if I wanted to be self sufficient in them.

Glad we gave you a bit of a laugh @dthornely ;)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • I like roasted parsnips, can't beat them. Bit maybe I'll buy them of instead of growing them! 🤣

That's what I call sensible @dthornely, not like me, I beat myself up every year because my beetroot is rubbish but still grow the ruddy things. Some folks never learn  :#

  • 1st year growing Beetroot was limited success,  but this year they did very well @Uff . I wonder if it was starting them off in a raised bed in March under a closhe until May.🤔

I dunno @purplerallim. Trouble is my dad passed on several of his traits to me and one of them is stubbornness. Mind you I've cracked it with carrots so beetroot might follow suit.
