Carrots and Parsnips

  • Ive had a great year for both carrots and parsnips. I’ve always found carrots easy to grow and never had a problem with fly, however these days they are in raised beds or plastic planters which puts off the carrot fly as they are low flying 😁
This was my first year for parsnips and I’ve been very pleased with them although I did get some bolting early on but they were fine.
I used topsoil, manure and compost in my beds and also added veg fertiliser later on every couple of weeks.
However the beetle got into my leeks in sep/Oct which has meant destroying the whole crop (glad we harvested some earlier on) so I may have to net next year 🙁

Seeing as beetroot has been mentioned, can anyone tell me why my beetroot did really well, fabulous tops, but less than golf ball size roots please?
There can be a multitude of reasons.
Like the OP, lack of sun?
You need to know (and convey) your soil type, which is more than one element.

    Overcrowded?

They do best in rich soil, (lots of phosphorus) unlike some root veg.
  • Oh, please, please, try growing carrots in polystyrene boxes. So easy, and no problems with snails, or carrot root fly. So very easy, just make sure you use soil based compost
  • And a huge box about a foot deep.
  • Wish i could post a photo, but not sure how to do it!

If you're struggling with the photos, try reducing them to around 1MB. There's a constant problem on the site with uploading ,which is very frustrating, as it's a pretty important feature when folk want help with all sorts of things.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

Not wishing to go off topic but I find a quick and easy way of reducing a pic file size is to take a screen shot and post that instead of the photo or if using Windows use the snipping tool.

  • I have a photo and picture resizing app, and use that on all pictures I post on here. 🙂

My screen shot option is no longer working unfortunately.  :/
I have a photo editor on  the laptop. Most of my photos are far too big for the sites I use them on, so I do the same as you @purplerallim. I don't do every photo I have, just the ones I want to post.
When the site was updated a few years back, we were supposed to be able to load photos at 5 or 6 MB. That very quickly stopped happening.
