Mushrooms

Today I went into the garden and there were mushrooms growing everywhere. I can only think that the compost bought from the garden centre had added spent mushroom compost in it. I don’t know if the mushrooms are edible but are rather large. Can anyway identify them? Enclosed photo.

  • @Scarletmist Think this might be one for @Uff. It is normal for mushrooms to grow in bags of compost. Whatever you do don't eat them.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

Yes - all perfectly normal at this time of year, but never eat anything until you have a positive ID.  :)

@wild edges and @steephill will be able to ID them for you  :)

  • Thanks Fairygirl In my years of gardening I have never seen so many mushrooms. I’ll get over to wild edges and steep hill for identification.

They'll hopefully see my 'tag' on their names, and look in   :)
Most mushrooms that appear are harmless, but better to be safe than sorry.  ;)

Can you pick one please and take a photo of the stem and underside. Choose a nice clean looking one if you can.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
  • Hi there wild edges I’ve picked a mushroom it’s size is 5 1/2 by 6 1/2 size. Makes gardening more interesting when things suddenly appear. Hope you can identify it.

That looks like one of the agarics. Does it smell of aniseed Scarletmist?

It could be Horse Mushroom, Agaricus arvensis or Field Mushroom, Agaricus campestris. The former should smell of aniseed so if your sample doesn't it is more likely to be field mushroom.
