What State Is Your Loft In?

  • Possibly he gilded the frames for his own paintings?  It would have been quite usual for an artist to do that, back in the day.

That's just reminded me. I have a box somewhere that contains some sheets of gold leaf. M in law gave them to me when f in law died. She also gave me a little gadget that cut the margins off wallpaper leaving strings of narrow paper strips. Must find them.

  • My loft is empty except for insulation and possibly a few mice which I know nothing about. It is only crawl space as the bedroom ceiling was lifted during previous renovations, and continues into next door anyway. When I moved in 20 years ago I resolved 20 years ago to never put anything up there. It is very difficult to get up there and after the trauma of emptying my previous loft didn,t want to repeat the experience.
    However.
I now have a large shed, which is bursting at the seams.
Recently, I had the last contents of a storage container delivered, it had only been there for 17 years! I could hardly get inside the house for storage boxes. Very slowly and painfully I began getting rid of "stuff". Then Shut Down was introduced, the local tip was on restricted access, queues a mile long and all charity shops closed. When they reopened they were so picky about what they would and would not take because they were inundated with donations from everyone having sort-outs of sheds, garages etc.
I still haven't finished getting rid of my treasures. What do you do with dozens of framed pictures left over from when I used to exhibit my work in a small gallery, the kids have had their pick, and they were so expensive to have framed? I must have had about 200 books, mainly reference books for various courses I had been on,I loathe parting with my books, but they had to go, craft materials etc. etc.
Oooooh ! It is so painful.
I try to console myself by thinking that at least someone is getting a bargain somewhere out there and a charity is benefitting from the money they make.
I haven't started on the shed yet. OMG!

My giddy aunt @Joyce Goldenlily. I think that might be close to a record, 17 years in storage!

Well I asked the young woman across the lane if she of her little daughter would like the Christmas tree decorations but they have more than enough. I don't want to throw them away as they were quite expensive, full sets of baubles, wooden ones, glass angels etc. I don't suppose a charity shop would want them so I can only think of Freecycle.

I think a charity shop may welcome them at this time of year @Uff. They make nice window displays to catch the eye of buyers. Worth a try, especially as they are good quality.

I made a little stable three years ago and sourced nativity figures from charity shops to place inside it. They don't 'match' but it doesn't matter, even though last year I did wonder if my Joseph was possibly a shepherd.....
I had taken all the other decorations to charity shops and l'm very happy with the downsizing and this simple presence of 'Christmas'.

I have to take the jigsaws in so I'll ask if they want the decorations Woodgreen, thank you. Some are boxed anyway so it might not be such a faff for them.

My local charity shop wasn't accepting Christmas decorations @Uff , but this was a couple of weeks ago. It might get worth giving them a call to check first.
My local Freecycle is already having requests for Christmas decorations and trees, so you might have more luck on there.

I did just that AnnD and they were pleased to take the 15 jigsaw puzzles, they were selling them for £3 and on the off chance I asked if they wanted the tree decorations. They wanted those too, she said they always sold well.
I was quite pleased about that.
