Our loft is empty except for the insulation we had put in. When we moved here, the previous owners left a child’s bed and some carpet cut offs up there, but we cleared those and were determined not to fill it with stuff.
We have a garage which has shelving to store things we use now and again and a shed.
The car lives in the garage, so we have to be strict about what we keep.

I did however make myself give away a couple of carrier bags full of used Jiffy bags in different sizes recently!
I keep those for wrapping broken glass or crockery in before putting it in the bin.  But they do mount up, don't they?

They've been recycled by our car club for posting spare parts, some of which can be rather rusty! @Woodgreen.

I love the inventiveness of uses for things other than their original purpose.

Interesting thread. My loft is ripe for a clear out - boxes of old Uni files (x2), computer bits, old clothes and goodness knows what else. Trouble is I have a spare room full of similar and OH has a study full too.

I have episodes of clearing out but OH definitely does not.

I must say that I am dreading clearing the parents homes when the time comes. Both sides have a life time of stuff including things from their late spouse.

Have you read about ‘Swedish Death Cleaning’?
Its not like bereavement clearing but more a preparation for later life, decluttering and organising both stuff and admin with the ethos of making things easier (particularly for the family) when downsizing/ill health/death happens.

I must say, that idea struck a chord with me.

My garden and I live in South Wales.
  • Are you within reach of Beamish museum, @pansyface?  They have genuine old packets and bottles of food etc in their shop reconstructions, so they might be happy to receive your gelatine and gravy browning...
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

I'd never heard of that @AuntyRach but I've had a feeling of late that I'd like to declutter and get rid of stuff that I don't use and never will use again. I actually started about a month ago by disposing of my camera gear and it felt like a weight off my shoulder. It was expensive stuff but the guilt about not using it has disappeared.
I felt better again after clearing the loft yesterday.
Perhaps I'm preparing for the next phase of my life.

My Hubby said, "I hope you told "them", ours is imaculate", of course I did. We did the garage recently too, but our daughter who moved in April, still has a lot of stuff in there. We told her and her bloke its going to get damnp!!!
  • @pansyface OH has had a look at brush photo ... his father was a college lecturer in painting techniques, gilding, marbling and all that sort of stuff.  OH thinks those look a lot like the squirrel-hair brushes used to apply gold leaf.
