Bulbs already growing

Hi everyone

I planted a lot of bulbs a few weeks ago, including a large selection pack in a big pot. I went out today and the ones in the pot are already growing and showing well above the soil. I’ve put some additional soil on them but how can I delay them until Spring?

Could this be due to the mild weather? Has anyone else had this?

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

thank you all!

I don't think there's anything much you can do but the cold weather, when it comes, should stop them for a while. Climate change means that our plants no longer follow what is prescribed the gardening books or the packets your bulbs came in.

  • Not ones that have just been planted but yes others have growth and this is normal for us this time of the year. They don't produce huge growth and don't flower in advance, maybe some weeks ahead unless the winter/early spring becomes very cold

@laura101187 I don't know what you are growing but Muscari bulbs have alot of green growth in the Autumn then flower in early spring.

Squirrels, badgers, whatever, dig up my bluebell bulbs but don't eat them.  They are starting to shoot (the bulbs that is, and maybe me - at the squirrels).  It always happens but I don't expect them tp flower before their usual time.

Hi @laura101187. It's fairly common for some to start sprouting, and as said - they'll settle down as it gets colder, and should flower at the usual times. Muscari foliage appears now, as @GardenerSuze says, and the flowers appear later, so if you have any of those, that's also normal.
As long as the bulbs are at the right sort of depth in your pots, they should be fine.  :)

I wish the squirrels would dig up my bluebells! I doubt their arms ( do they have arms?) are long enough😒

  • Well I’m not surprised really ... I thought I was in Rome or Lisbon this afternoon. Tea on the patio, no jacket or coat. It was actually warmer outside than in the house lol
  • Flowers in my hanging baskets are back in bloom again .. not that im complaining !

Aye - just rub it in @muckyhandsmike, why don't you!
Peeing yesterday afternoon here and I think our high was 13 degrees. I'd have needed my waterproofs and a few layers if I'd wanted tea on the patio!   :D

It's certainly been exceptionally mild here, even with all the rough weather. Saves on the heating, so I suppose that's the one benefit. Warm autumns are just weird to me though.  :)
