Fred Streeter MBE

Hi There, I have been trying to get in touch with Gardeners World TV Program, from the email addresses I have found, I have sent the below via email however have had rebounds, could anyone help please, thank you in advance
‐‐--------‐---------------------------------------------------------------------

Good Evening

I am not sure who to ask?

Apologies for the late night email, however I have just got home from the County AGM for Northamptonshire meeting for the WI where Nick Bailey from Gardners World did a fabulous talk about colours of the gardens.

I will be purchasing his book on line as it was cash only only for the book on the night.

However I did wait to speak to him as I am lately saddened by the gardners of today not knowing about the real gardeners of the past, and I don't mean the likes of Percy Thrower...

So I asked him if he had heard of Fred Streeter, and like many TV gardner presenters he admitted he had not heard of him,  of which I do get as Nick is young, and Fred died in 1975, and he won't be known to others as much now, however Fred has an MBE his name & should be up there at the top as well, being known to all presenters.

Frederick Streeter MBE was a British horticulturalist and broadcaster, he had a weekly radio show, appeared on desert disk, wrote books and has an autobiography.

I am wondering of maybe you can look at doing a TV program on Gardners of the past, green fingers are in our family,  My father, my brother myself, my nephew who bread a flower after my Brother (RIP) Brian Paige,  I already knew about the colours Nick spoke about, my father (RIP) used to tell me.

Please take the time to read his books, read up about him, sadly he is the forgotten gardner.

Why does this mean a lot to me?

My Great Grandmother and Fred's Grandmother were sisters,

Many thanks & Kind Regards
Nicola Lumbers (nee paige, Grandmother Streeter)

I found this interesting piece about him below and can remember him from many years ago. I agree with you, about a programme on gardeners of the past, there were some very knowledgeable people. I'm sorry I can't help you to redirect your email but others might.

@nickielumbers , apparently GW is made by the BBC Studio's Unscripted Productions .

They have various locations around the UK, it might be worth contacting either the London or Salford offices. They should be able to help.

I have heard of Fred Streeter, but l must confess to confusing him with Fred Loads. If anyone is interested, here is some information about him in addition to that posted by @Uff .

@nickielumbers Advolly Ricmond has presented various historical gardens for GW including their owners.
I recall one on the gardens at Alton Towers a couple of years ago. I think the biggest problem they have is creating something that is visual and interesting to as many people as possible.

I remember reading Nick Bailey's book 365 days of Colour just after it was published. I was lucky enough to get it from the library. Not sure if it has been revised but some of the combinations already may not work due to changes in weather patterns. As a reminder of a lovely evening a great investment.

If your WI plan another garden speaker in the future. We have had various celeb garden speakers at our gardening club over the years. I can highly recommend James Alexander Sinclair.  He lives in Oxfordshire so not too far away.

I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

Like GardenerSuze, I wonder how Gardeners’ World could present a historical piece in a lively, visually interesting way in order to enlighten the viewing public. If I’m being honest I find many of Advolly’s contributions to GW to be a trifle dull and ponderous but I know many others like her.

Wikipedia does at least have a page on Fred. (Horticulturalists are not that well represented).

    Desert Island Discs

Nice to see a good long entry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography too

I personally don't think it would be that hard to have some small segments on GW dedicated to horticultural figures of the past. Designers like Jeykll, Chatto, Sackville, Repton, Lutyens and various plant hunters get mentions all the time.

This is the BBC's 100th year - they should be celebrating the people that helped to build it.

@Fire I think that fridays GW is the last for this season maybe they will include the BBC's 100 years.
I also agree with @BenCotto Advolly's presentation is very ponderous and slow.I don't mind but not for everyone.

I'm not an Advolly fan either.

I know what you mean, but I rather like her being a bit different. I don't think I could bear a listening for her for too long though. She speaks almost as slowly as Brian Cox does on his documentaries, but without the epic and overwhelming soundtrack :)
She does know an amazing amount of stuff though that I find interesting.

I find her quite interesting. Certainly a lot better than a few of the other GW presenters who are well past their 'sell by' or conversely, should never have got within spitting distance of the programme in the first place.
I used to miss GW over winter but if never returned it wouldn't bother me much now...well, not in it's current format anyway.  Shame.
