I used a buytl liner with a 25 year guarantee. It is worth paying for a good quality liner to avoid having to replace it. It is possible to buy liner by the metre to avoid unnecessary wastage. It is also a good idea to wait for a couple of warm days so you can open out the liner flat to warm and soften before putting it into the hole. The liner is also easier to fold and fit into the shape of the hole. I put a thick layer of newspaper against the soil, followed by a felted pond liner and then the butyl because my soil is very stony. Note. It is important to use aquatic soil in containers as garden soil is too rich. Hessian squares can be used to line plant baskets to avoid the soil washing out of the baskets.Top with gravel to retain the soil as well.
Wondering about plants like water fgmn. Does it die over winter? My new window box pond is about 40cm deep. I would like to buy something now (oxygenating?) that won't die cover winter but will carry on. I have bought various loads of hornwort over the years, but it always seems to die off. Any thoughts? thanks
You need miniature waterlilies. Nymphaea Pygmy helova, I have done a very quick check and it looks as if orders for waterlilies are now being held over until next Spring for optimum planting time. They are rather expensive. They can grow in 4 ins. of water, they come in white, cream or pink flowers and are lovely, like tiny stars with small leaves. I would suggest you go to a water garden specialist supplier for a choice. I always used Stapleys Watergarden Specialists but sadly they have closed down now. I cannot remember the name of the supplier I used, I ordered the plants last winter so had to wait until Spring, I bought one for my daughter as a birthday present. When it arrived it was beautifully packed, undamaged, and it has flowered profusely this year. I will try and track down who I used. (It may well have been World of Water in Dorset)
