Making a pond

  • I used a Fothergills powder for blanket weed. It’s almost all gone after 3 weeks.

Not sure how long it will last but apparently it’s organic and doesn’t harm plants or beasties.
  • There is a flexible butyl liner covered with tiny stones, available online, to cover the edge of ponds. (Pebbledash style). I used some in my pond, lasted about 20 years before the stones began falling off and bald patches developed. Have got to replace it It is more expensive than plain butyl, comes in various widths. Useful for tiny critters to get in and out of the pond.

Right. Clay is nice and workable today so I'm going to make a start on the digging.
Question 1: bearing in mind that it won't get walked on, what is the minimum width of flat ground that I would need to leave around the hole?
Question 2: I have some large cobbles. If I use them, would they need to be bedded in concrete?
Question 3: what do you do with excess liner? Do you cut it off or fold it back into the hole or turn it under?
First of many questions, I'm sure your help us really appreciated.

Oops! I'm going to have to fill the hole in again. Electric cable running through the middle😞
I'm still going to have a pond, though, on the other side of the garden. West facing.  Definitely no cable! Plenty of sun but not as much as original site. Near a bench and no path boundary to worry about so probably a better place anyway.
Plus a large planting opportunity in the filled in hole.

Does the cable have proper armouring?

Yes. Just spotted the yellow tube. I thought it ran along beside the path. Apparently not.

I thought yellow pipes were gas? black for Electricity and blue for water?

This would have been laid by previous owners. It takes the electricity to the garage. Good job it wasn't black or I wouldn't have noticed it.

    okey dokey.

  • I used a 45cm overhang of liner and dug and buried 15/20cm of it (moved the gravel back, dug, buried, soil, membrane and gravel back on top) leaving 30cm to lay my stones on top of. I’m gonna plant around it more next spring.
