I've got to speak up for the Horniman - I love it, I go fairly often, and while it's not the same as when I loved it as a child, many of the things I loved it for are still there, including the fact that it's almost all free. The fabulous Arts & Crafts building, the traditional cases of stuffed animals, birds etc, the Apostle Clock (though I haven't made it to watch the apostles at 4pm for years, as we always did when I was little) and of course the famous walrus! In addition, the newer (though not new - I took my kids when they were little and they're not little now!) musical instrument and ethnographic galleries are phenomenal and lots of the temporary exhibitions are really interesting. The aquarium is still good although I rarely visit it and the gardens are infinitely improved.
'If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.'
The last time I was there an entire gallery had been stripped and filled with black and white photos of blokes in beards climbing up the North Pole or something.
