Wild strawberry/ potentilla confusion

B3B3 Posts: 27,505
Am I right in assuming that potentilla don't ever spread by runners ?
When weeding, the seedlings are easy enough to identify, but it's much harder with the more mature plants.
To make it even more difficult, I dotted small potentilla plants at random all over the garden last year. Many have flowered so I can distinguish them but the largish ones that maybe haven't flowered yet are a problem

Which potentilla? Theres a large family of plants under that name and some of them do spread by runners but some don't.

Creeping cinquefoil, (potentilla reptans) spreads by rooting runners?

That's a pain but at least I'll be able to identify the ones still attached to the parent plant. Thank you @Woodgreen

Yes hard to tell from wild strawberries.I can’t tell the difference till they flower/ fruit.

Yes @bcpathome 😒 by which time they've sent runners out into the middle of neighbouring plants. They must be very closely related.

Yes I reckon so .I take out a few each year and hope for the best .They do go a bit mad if you let them .Other than keeping a very close eye on them ,don’t really know what else to suggest .I just live with it .

That one seems to be clump forming, propagation is by division so any babies that are not seedlings are probably weeds.
