Pruning yellow flag iris?

I have a yellow flag iris which I am trying to keep alive in a temporary bog garden until my pond is ready. It has a few brown leaves on it ... is this normal? Do I need to pull off/prune old leaves? Pics to follow shortly!

  • It's normal. You don't need to do anything to them, they can take care of themselves. Rather too well - if it is a small pond you will have to split and discard regularly! You can remove the leaves if you wish for aesthetic reasons, but they will die back in autumn anyway.
  • Great, thank you. The pond will be about 15 sqm, but I will keep an eye on the iris, as I don't want it to take over.

Having had it take over a pond, I would advise keeping it in a pond basket.
How can you lie there and think of England

  • My big pond is something like 300sqm and I still have to keep an eye on it!

Mine escaped from it's pond basket. It got very heavy to pull out.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

Ok the flag iris is staying in it's cage (a submerged tub or something, but away from the pond). It will NOT be allowed in the pond!
