Great if that works for you.

Be sure to put some sort of angled escape route around at least a couple of the edges so that baby birds etc don’t get stuck in it and drown.
Certainly, we had some marginal plants in the pond at our previous house, frogs loved them too.

Just pricing it up and it looks like I can shave off a little cash from the price of the kit by doing it DIY style after all, plus I get the fun of building it.
  • Timber is in, fixings are in, hole is prepped ready to start building :)

Due to the remnants of a tree stump it will be a two-level pond, the deep end will be around 2'+  and the shallower end around 18".

We can use the shallow end for some planting.

A fish pond is generally not a wildlife pond, but if you want to encourage other things than fish, the a good mass of cover around the edge will help critters to feed safer.
  • Mostly fish for us.

  • Beware the dreaded heron.
They are really sneaky and rarely visit a pond when people are around. I had a pond in a previous garden and never ever saw a heron but my neighbour told me one used to visit my pond in the very early hours of the morning. I have never seen a heron in my current garden but one has had a number of tasty meals from my pond. I tried covering the pond with netting but when I found half a dozen frogs wrapped up entangled in the netting I decided to stop trying to keep fish to feed my visitors.
Both of my ponds were fairly close to the house which I thought would put off the herons but no such luck.
  • Yeah we had trouble with them in our previous house. I'm slightly hoping the small size of our current garden, high tree lines etc will stop them landing, if not then i'll have to come up with another idea
  • All done, ready for underlay and liner, 26" deep to mid pint then 18" deep, 1m wide, 2.4m long :)

That was quick! Is it all receycled wood?
  • Sadly no, its all 3x3 treated fenceposts and some decking.

I love doing jobs like this in the garden, once planned and drawn, it takes me no time to build stuff.
