I’m in the process of lifting all my Hellebores from various places and planting them all in one bed,  the roots are huge,  OH had to pick axe them out and then I couldn’t lift them to their new spots,  I don’t t think they are a plant to live happily in a pot,  I’d never realised just how big these beasts are.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

Yes, I dug this one up and it had a huge, deep root ball about 50cm across, 10kg.

But I think Bee Lady's rootball should be fine now if just bought recently.

  • Wow - I've got a couple of others that I put in a border and I am surprised at how big they've got. They're in the sun too and didn't flinch at this year's weather!
I was hoping I'd put this one in a pot within a pot but annoyingly I've put it straight into a heavy pot, so that's going to be fun to empty out!

Mine have been fine in drought and intense sun too (Marbled Group and Corsican types). Always mollucked by slugs though.
  • I don't want to brag (or tempt fate) but I just don't seem to get slugs!!

Even a slug would have to be tough to eat my lot. I was sorting them out yesterday,  pulling out dead leaves and stuff and my arms look like they've been attacked by a litter of killer kittens.
  • Their leaves are razor sharp aren't they!

All mine flop like that in the heat, even with lots of water. The center few stems (which are usually younger and shorter) stay upright. They'll perk back up a bit with cooler temps.
