What's wrong with my hellebore?

It's wilted a couple of times over summer when I've not watered it enough and it sprang back to life. But now it is staying floppy and wilted regardless of watering. What should I do?

  • Is it just coming to the end of its growing season? Ours in the ground don't have any new growth now and then they die back.

It doesn't look that bad.  Just keep it gently watered and wait.  It is probably evergreen.

  • I think it is evergreen. Well I think we're in for a rainy weekend so it'll have to get on with it! I'm not convinced it's happy though.
  • Do you know which one it is? If it is from the Rodney Davey group that is what they do at this time of year. You treat these slightly differently to H Orientalis only remove the leaves as they die.

  • @GardenerSuze the label says Snow Rose, helleborus x ericsmithii
I've just found it in the shed. It says the leaves lie flat when it's freezing but upright otherwise and it is evergreen.

Is it getting too much sun? I only have orientalis but they like shade best.
  • Tip it out and check the root system - damage/congestion ?
  • @Crazybeelady Eric Smith I think but I will stand corrected was a friend of Beth Chatto.  It is a cross and has some H Niger in it so I would think it needs more sun than H Orientalis. You could check to see if it is pot bound or dry, I would wear gloves for this job. As long as the leaves are not limp and you water I think it should be fine but I am comparing yours to mine which are in the garden. Not from the Rodney Davey group and I would think very early flowering?

Hellebores get huge root systems and are often not terribly happy in pots long term. But yours looks pretty well (apart from the flop). Maybe have a look at the root ball and consider planting it out....
  • It's just living in shade, I bought it towards the end of last year and I gave it a bigger pot than it had at the time. I'll have a look at the root situation- I thought I'd have a bit more time before it started getting potbound. Thanks all
