Long before I knew the Latin name (smilax) or even the common name (greenbrier), my sister called it Devil's Thorn and now so do I.

Verbena bonariensis are called tufties in our family. My dad gave my sister a clematis cutting in a pot. The next year she said there was something growing in the pot but she didn't think it was clematis. When asked what it looked like she said it's tufty.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
  • I find Latin/scientific names tricky. In my head, "Leucanthemum x superbum" is still "the super-bum".
