What do you call it?

Do any of you have your own name for what grows in your garden?

For me it's petunias - ugly trumpet flowers

  • I have tried to think of one to add but nothing springs to mind. I was always encouraged to use the Latin so words like Tragopogon, artropurpura and Galactites Tomentosa make me smile. I am sure there are lots more.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
  • My husband refers to the tomato and courgette plants as "the Triffids", especially at the stage where they seem to "suddenly" spring from seedlings on the windowsill into big leafy plants.

Veronica beccabunga is satisfying to say.
  • Many of our plants are "named" after people who have given them to us. It is so good to walk around the garden and remember so many (some gone) garden friends.

I too love the sound of some of the Latin names. Mr. Calamagrostis is the doctor from a Hound of the Baskervilles. Ophiopogon is a planet visited by James T. Kirk.

Pendulous Sedge is the accountant's clerk from the Pickwick Papers. Chincherinchee is a song from a Disney song sung by Dick Van Dyke. Mrs Silybum turns up in Gulliver's Travels. Dr Meristem is the murderer from Christie's Death in the Library. Ochitsubaki  Nebari was Kubla Khan's wife who ruled Xanadu after his death.

I have had lots of ladies in my garden - Rosa, Iris, Viola, Veronica, Holly, Daisy, Jasmine and Camillia. Plus Ghislaine, Ena, Edith  and lots of alcoholic Mollies.
