I'm on fast draining sandy soil. I can usually work on the lawn one hour after rain. But at this time of the year, sunny, windy days are best. These usually begin with a heavy dew, which I swish off and leave at least one hour.
Dampish grass leaves better lines, better still if I had a roller. And also allows more to fit in the grass box, so less emptying.
location: Surrey Hills, England, ex-woodland acidic sand. "Have nothing in your garden that you don't know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful."
Lucky you @bède. We have sandy, draining soil in Norfolk and the lawn is still a mess. The grass seed is germinating so I hope it will be OK by spring.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

For me, I am happy not to water in future droughts. But for you, the odd sneaky watering-can might be in order.
