I have a railway behind me and they cut most of the trees down last autumn. One of which was a dreaded Sicamore. Mind you it's started growing from the stump already!
I guess your lawn hasn't been mown for some time. Perrenial weeds with deep roots can grow quickly in these conditions. Just cut it back for now, I guess it will succumb to regular lawn lowing when it restarts.
