Plant growing in lawn

edited August 2022 in Problem solving
HI, this year I have an issue with an unknown plant growing in my lawn. I thought it maybe from the roots of our acer tree but the leaves are different. Any ideas what it could be. They seem to be sprouting from a group of small round bulb type things.

Hello Rick and welcome to the forum.  Your plant looks to me a little like colts foot but I wouldn't bet on it.
@nutcutlet is excellent at identifying plants so she may get this alert and come and take a look for you.

I don't think it's Coltsfoot, that doesn't have the leaves coming off the stem like that. Could you get a pic with the top of the plant in focus

    In the sticks near Peterborough
  • Hi thanks, I'll post a better pick when it shots again as I have removed the last three.

Can you dig up some of the roots/bulbs and show us a picture of the whole thing?

Are you sure it's coming from bulb like things and isn't a sucker from a tree like a prunus?
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

I thought prunus sucker but the leaves don't look quite right to me. When I pull mine up they sometimes have kind of "knotty" roots though. Will see if I can get a pic for comparison.

I think it is a sucker but the only tree nearby in my acer. I also have next doors crab apple popping up I  my lawn. It could be the acer but the leaves are different. I'll dig down an trace I back when the ground is softer. I'm going to kill off the lawn this spring anyway and reseed.

If your acer is grafted then the suckers will come from the rootstock and could look different to the top growth … they would still be a type of acer/maple tho.

    🤔 any poplar trees nearby?

Suckers can also come from the roots of a tree that's been cut down but the stump left. Here's a prunus sucker with "knobbly bits" for comparison - the leaves are dried up and wilted because it's been in the green bin since the weekend.
