Acer

Hi am here again for help for please.
I am flummoxed with this plant.
I inherited it and assumed it was as a Japanese acer. But it doesn’t seem to be growing how I would expect it to.
is it a young maple tree.

Yes there are a large number of hybrid cultivars  & they have a lot of subtle variations.  One of the main books is by JD Vertrees & Peter Gregory.  Although they are American it's one of the most complete guides available.

What were you expecting from it?  As others have said, there are many different Japanese maples, some of which remain very dwarf, while others become small trees.  It could be Acer palmatum 'Bloodgood', which grows to 2.5-4m height and spread...

Yes, what are you expecting from it? If you keep it in a pot, you can keep it small, we put a variagated one in the ground in our last house, it grew 10 feet in 10 years.

Yes - Acers are maples, as said.
What were you looking for it to do? There are hundreds of varieties, and they grow at different rates, as @Liriodendron has said, and with different habits. Did you think it would grow more rapidly, or do you feel it's too big?
The growing conditions will also affect the speed, and the general shape, but they can be pruned, although not just now  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

It looks perfect to me  with plenty of new growth, hence the different colour.

I knew it was an acer but I wasn’t sure which variety.
I inherited it ( in a pot originally) then planted it in my garden when I moved house.
I just wanted to know if anyone knew which variety it is.
I hadn’t realised there were so many!
i had compared it to my other acer which looks different in shape as you can see from picture below.

That's one of the Acer palmatum 'Dissectum' cultivars (don't know which one, sorry).  They are the small ones!  My Dad had one in his garden which after 30 years was around a metre tall by 1.5 wide.   :)
