I have two of the “miniature” patio ones, both are in 40cm square planters and seem to love it, covered in flowers, staying small….but much “shaggier” than the pretty photos on the websites! 😂
Marne la vallée, basically just outside Paris 🇫🇷, but definitely Scottish at heart.

I planted 2, a purple one which grew into a monster like the ones you see on railway sidings, and I removed it. I have a pink one which has remained small and compact, so far.

The common, species one [those seen growing on railway sidings, cracks in walls and roof gutters]  is very different from the cultivated varieties. They aren't quite as promiscuous  ;)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I Grow buzz Ivory and it’s a lovely shrub, but it does need pruning to keep it under control and regular deadheading. I reduce the height by a half in the autumn to prevent wind rock and then in the spring when it starts to leaf up l cut it hard back to about 2 feet. You could also remove some of the older stems completely to stop it getting too congested round the base.

I have several....Buzz Hot Raspberry, which has topped out at about 5ft, Indigo, which is 6ft-plus and almost as wide, and Magenta, which so far has stayed small but had a bad start last year. The first two need severe pruning in early spring to keep under control. Magenta may well do once it gets going! I also have Summer Bird Compact Purple in a pot, which has a slightly weeping growth habit and has unexpectedly stayed small!
  • @Bright star I'm somewhat concerned now as I've just bought a replacement Buzz Ivory. I'm definitely not looking for it to hit any taller than 1.5m!

Sorry for the late reply @februarysgirl, the tallest mine has reached is about 6 feet and that was because it didn’t get pruned hard in the spring. They are such tough shrubs that they could cope with careful pruning more than once in a growing season. 😊

  • @Bright star Mine arrived yesterday and is a good looking plant 😁 I'll keep in mind that I may need to have at it a couple of times a year. When would you say were the best times?
