Hollyhocks or not

I scattered Hollyhock seeds last year but am not sure if these are actually growing here or whether they might be that weed which resembles Geums. Am I wasting my time nurturing these?

@JennyJ Yes that looks like the weed geum to me.

Hmm, not me @GardenerSuze !  It's to dry here for the weedy geums, they like damper conditions.  Auto-fill error?

I would say they’re Hollyhocks, did you have hollyhock there last year?

If you aren't sure I would tap one out of the pot and check to see if it has a tap root. You should be able to see the hollyhock from the root system.

Photo 2 is the Geum at the top a cutivated plant or a weed? If it is a weed these could be the seedlings. If it is a plant as@Lyn suggests could be Hollyhocks.
It is possible to tell the difference between Geum the weed and the cultivated plant but I am not sure from photos.

  • Thank you so much for all your kind comments. Not sure what to do - don’t want to plant these out if they are weeds!! Will leave them for a few weeks and maybe check a root on one of them. Beginning to think I am a bit crazy doing this!!
  • Lyn - yes have had the one solitary Hollyhock there for the past two years and that made me wonder if these were seeds from it.
