    It does seem familiar but just cannot get there at the moment.
    I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

    Could the palm be a cordyline? And how far away from it are you finding roots? Of the three you mention I think the roots look most like that (but I could of course be wrong).
    Another possibility is that a plant has been taken out from your garden at some point and some roots left behind.
