Mysterious root

Hi. I'm a keen gardener and my friend just started gardening and has been digging up the old soil and discovered this. I was wondering if anyone knows what it might be? Many thanks

Hello there Dal and welcome to the forum. As you have hinted at, it is extremely difficult to identify anything from a piece of root such as you are showing in your pictures. It could be potted up and its growth, as it develops. may assist in the identification.
The nearest plant in my garden that exhibits similarities to that is Geranium macrorrhizum.

@dal750 If it is G macrorrhizum you should be able to smell the root, not as strong as the leaves but smells of pine at best ,some people hate the smell.

Hi @nickmkemp  and welcome to the forum. 😊

If your photo doesn’t load reducing the size a bit usually does the trick. If not let us know and we’ll find a solution.

@nickmkemp Do you have any idea what was growing nearby,  could it be in a neighbours garden? I would think it is from a large shrub or tree. Can you cut through it easily. If @nutcutlet is around?

I agree with @GardenerSuze, tree or shrub. In the photo on top of the bin the tick end on the left will be the end nearest the source, it was probably pointing at the tree in question. Can you remember which way round it was?
