Identify Plants? Weeds? Flower? Grass?

Hi.

Back again with another id request (learning as I go)

Can anyone identify any of these? Wondering whether to leave or pull before they get bigger . .
Some of these were not there 3 weeks ago and have just shot up . . .(might be from seeds in the "soil" I bought or dormant ones underneath that were activated after the area was cultivated.

That's a varied selection, some may be from bird feeders.

    5. Astilbe
    6. ?
    7. Eschscholzia - California Poppy
    8. Willowherb

8's a willowherb - pull it out pronto - it'll be setting seed before you know it.
4 and 6 look like weed grasses to me, and 1 looks like chickweed or something similar.
    5 is an Astilbe.
7 might be something worth keeping but I can't quite place it.

Could be @AnniD . I also thought maybe Limanthes, poached-egg plant. It's been a while since I've grown either though.

    Failure is always an option.

    1 Chickweed

    2 knotgrass (aka redshank
    weed)

3 looks a bit like a sunflower but I’m not sure

    4 could be sweetcorn?

    5 Astilbe

    6 Couch grass?

    7 Eschscholzia aka Californian poppy

There´s more. Haha. Just have to go and snap a few other things. It is pretty wild out there . . .

1,2,3,4,and 6 are from the same small rockery area.

    5,7,8 are all separate.

Thanks for all the responses so far guys.

I must say, the "sweetcorn" one could be a bit bizarre . . .perhaps seeds from the compost I bought?
The "sunflower" too. That is 15cm-20cm tall already within 3 weeks. But growing in shallow soil.

I should pull 1,2, 6 and 8 ideally and see what happens with the others?
Willowherb is growing in loads of places in cracks in the path etc.

The chickweed seems to have sprung up around a hen and chick plant I bought - so possibly came in with that?

The Californian poppy would make sense. I think some were planted about 2 years ago, but were presumed dead seeds - cultivation of area (inc. new compost) probably gave a couple a kick up the butt?
  • Actually there appears to be hundreds of the willowherb  :open_mouth:

I first noticed it in an area where I had tried (and mostly failed except for a couple) to plant a British Wildflower collection (from those bee and butterfly seed mixes)- so thought it was something to do with that. Obviously not, Oooopps!

That’s Willowherb for you … it never comes on its own … it always brings its friends and relations .., and then they produce more just like them 🙄
