I would recommend, given that the acer's current pot has no drainage holes, that you re-pot it straight away. It does look as if it's got far too dry, so watering it thoroughly and regularly is definitely going to help it, but if excess water has no way to drain out of the pot, you risk the roots sitting in water and rotting.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
I might repot right away then, thanks for the tip Liriodendron. I don't think I have any pots larger than that, so I will buy one, I suppose some kind of plastic one so it won't get too heavy, and with holes in the bottom (or make holes with nails). It is true that if I water it well and regularly, I need to make sure I don't waterlog the roots.
Nanny Beach, does your husband feed with fertiliser every 2 weeks all the way through to late autumn, and what kind of fertiliser and how much?
It's so helpful hearing how everyone does their acers.
Good luck @Pink678. If your current acer doesn’t make it (although I hope it will), just look at it as a new opportunity to get another one and apply the same potting principles
I give 6 litres of Envii Seafeed Xtra (diluted following the label) to my potted acer every two weeks. It’s not a fertiliser but more like a tonic and I do the same for all my shrubs. In spring, I work in a handful of blood, fish and bone at the top layer of the pot and add a mulch of manure compost, taking care that the manure doesn’t touch the stems.
For your acer, I would wait until new growth is definitely happening before giving any type of feed.
I agree .Don’t feed till it shows signs of recovery ,be careful potting up in this hot weather ,buy a pot with holes or A Hole ,and keep it moist.I think you probably have enough information now to make a good choice of the way forward .Good luck with it .
Agree Punkdoc,(same as humans eh!) Feed from March to November, granules in packet, dissolved in water, dosage on pack, whatever our go to shop has. HOWEVER,Do the bark scratch test first,if it's not green....morte
Such great advice all, thank you so much. I really like the sound of Envii Seafeed Xtra. I've got a good plan now with your tips - let's hope it recovers with all this TLC. They have such beautiful leaves when healthy.
Btw you don’t have to buy that particular seaweed feed brand, it’s just the one I use as it seems to work well for my plants. I usually buy it when Envii have a buy-1 get-1 free offer.
