Verbena Bampton

Afternoon,

I’m thinking of getting Verbena Bampton but I’m slightly unsure as to its hardiness. The RHS website says H6 but the RHS shop website says borderline hardy. Beth Chatto website says fully hardy.

Any comments would be much appreciated,

Thanks.

I've just bought one. I'm keeping it in a container this year to see how it goes.

I've had it for several years and so far it's hardy for me here in South Yorkshire, and self-seeds well. However, I am east of the pennines so somewhat in what my geologist friend calls rain-shadow, and I have the dry free-draining sandy soil that it likes. And we haven't had a really hard winter since I got it.

Also, I gave one to my parents in Sheffield (colder and wetter, soil is a bit heavier than mine but not clay, more loamy, and on a hill so it doesn't get soggy) and it's been fine for the couple of years that they've had it, but again there hasn't been a really hard winter in that time.

  • Thanks. We’re in East Yorkshire and also have pretty well drained soil so I’ll take the plunge and get it.

It's hardy here - but then I live (almost) in the Bampton it was named for.  :)

I'm planning to collect and save some seed this year if I remember at the right time, just in case we get a cold winter and they get clobbered.

It's hardier than what's stated and it will self seed quite freely if you have free draining soil.

If it is happy it will go everywhere, if not you really can struggle to keep it. One in a nearby garden is 4ft by 4ft.

I've just bought one today and were having the same query with myself. Did a quick google and came up with the same results, I did see something about seedling not being as vibrant as the parent plant ?
