A house near me has snowdrops in them. You could adopt something similar by using one of the small ivies, or a Vinca for evergreen, all year colour, and add spring bulbs according to the soil and site.
If you have them in a separate pot inserted in it, you can then change that for summer flowering plants, depending on what you like - nasturtiums will flop over the sides, and so will many other annuals. The insert pot edges will be covered too.
Some blocks of wood, or similar, will get the inner height raised enough for a pot to sit on. I do it all the time with various pots and plants.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I have campanula in both of mine ( both pulled from the main plant in a big pot so free :)
The bigger one is in a plastic pot the smaller one is filled with soil and compost. They stay evergreen as well which is a bonus. The erigeron pot looks good..

They look lovely, going garden centre later so will have a look out for them.

I managed to get a campanula rapido blue and a erigeron stallone.

I'd like to grow some herbs in the little gaps towards the bottom what would be the best way to stop the soil falling through or would it be best to fill it with John innes 3 and compost?

Planted a few things today not sure on the acer being in the chimney I might see if I can get a campanula in white.

My dad split one of his ferns so we've only got half a fern on the tallest chimney but should fill out next year, we put a small creeping jenny in as well.

We just need a pot for the
    campanula.

I'd like to plant herbs in the bottom of the chimney but I'm still working on convincing my gf.
