  I agree with the ID but it can be kept to a reasonable size.  It accepts pruning and even hard cutting back and is very often seen in hedges. 

  Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.

  That's probably because by keeping it confined to that teeny pot and short of nutrients and water you are restricting the roots and it's almost becoming a bonsai.
