    I think Madame Alfred Carrière would be a good choice, as @Marlorena suggested. I have seen some pretty impressive photos from someone who grows it in a position which seems similar to your, up a balcony, north exposure, i managed to retrieve the picture:

    Apparently it is 7 m tall, in its 6th year. And she said she had never had any issues regarding frost.

    I also think your initial instincts are right and that MAC would be a good choice. I can’t speak from experience as mine is only young.

    Another option is the climbing version of Cécile Brunner, which is known as a ‘house eater’ so should get to 10m or more in your climate. It is reportedly both cold, heat and rain tolerant and was one of two options I had considered to grow up a tree, the other being Mme. Grégoire Staechelin.

    I have cold winters in my Spanish mountain climate with temperatures regularly down to -8c, late frosts that can nip new growth, baking hot temps also up to 40c from late spring that can fry blooms and monsoon-like rain that can spoil them. I am experimenting with climbers at the moment and struggling to find ones that can cope with the vagaries of my bonkers climate so I really do hope you find the right rose!

    ...I think that's a great help, thanks so much.  I expect the member will be very pleased to see the picture and your report.

  • @murasaki - fantastic picture and rose, exactly the kind of feedback I was hoping for.
    @nollie - thanks for the suggestions, I'll look them up.

    So far MAC is the strongest candidate. But I'm considering using two roses, in case one fails. If both grow big, even better. So far I like Paul Noel a lot from what I read about it but I'm researching all the other suggestions. I won't be planting until fall since bareroots are out of season now and potted rose are too expensive to ship - that is if I even find a distributor willing to ship to Romania.

    Dan, TuincentrumLottum in the Netherlands ships to Romania and has a big selection of climbers.  Plenty of us buy from them, the quality and price are really good and postage about €25 for up to 10 roses.

    thanks, I was also looking at https://rosariumlottum.com/ which I think is a different grower. There seem to be a lot of rose growers in Lottum...

    Later Edit - I checked it out, here's what Wikipedia says: Lottum has become a rose village. About 70% of all the Dutch roses are grown in Lottum.[5]

    i also bought my bare root roses from Lottum last autumn and i was very pleased. For container roses, i recommend PharmaRosa, a Hungarian company which ships to many countries, all year round. I got my Veilchenblau, Ghislaine and Buff Beauty from them, also very good quality.

    @Marlorena
    you are very gracious, no need to thank me! i can't imagine the time and energy you've put into this forum, helping so many people, not many of us could do the same, i think, even if we had your competence (which we don't). i am just a beginner and learning so much here!

    speaking of MAC, do these blooms look like her to you? i bought it this spring and it was supposed to be MAC, but i doubt it. i tried to get an answer to this before, as it really bugs me, but nothing came out of it, so i am trying again, maybe you can help me out.
    How were your first MAC blooms, @Nollie?

    Could it be Palais Royal instead?

    @murasaki, that is definitely what my MAC looks like although it is now up to the roof line.

    MAC This is about the last of the first flush and it was a bit high up but I think it shows quite well. MAC, taken about 3 weeks ago. A bit exhuberent for its space it gets a great many compliments from the passers-by.
