Small Red Spotted Entities That Don't Seem To Move?

Can anybody tell me what these are?  For the last 3 years, these beautiful yellow/green  leaves have started turning brown, not long after the appearanceof these red things?

I can't see them clearly, but suspect they may be leaf galls caused by tiny insects ... not usually considered harmful

Here’s a close up if it helps.  Although slightly blurred.

Thanks for your responses.  So the leaves turning brown, just afterwards, is coincidental.  Again, these are next to our garden fence, so could it be not enough watering?

Have you got photo of the whole tree @paulpuk2000?
Often, insects or pests etc, are attracted to a specimen because it's already a bit weakened. The bleached leaves are unlikely to be a result of those mites, but there could be something else already affecting the tree itself. Lack of water or the wrong site or soil for example  :)

Thx for your reply.  Here are the photos.  As it happens, the tree was planted by my mother in between 2 other trees, and I'm picking up the pieces.  The other 2 trees are fine.

They are galls. These will only affect a limited range of plants so will not spread to unrelated species. You can't effectively control them anyway but might want to give the plant some tlc.

I missed your photos - sorry. I don't think it's very happy there, especially between other trees. It looks as if it's just been bleached by sun. It's also not terribly suited to the space - they want to be very large, although the site will probably restrict it.
What are the other two trees @paulpuk2000 ?

  • The other tree is Clerodendrum trichotomum which is a chinese shrub that turns into a tree, which grows 5m high.  This has also struggled to do anything, and was planted probably at the same time.  My mother has Alzheimers so she can't remember when it was planted, but I think it's as old as the above tree, with the mites on.  I need to move at least one of them I think.

Not sure but could it be Acer Brilliantisimum?

  • Wow.  Spot on.  It DOES have pink foliage, early in spring, which turns yellow (as now) & green later on.  Thank you very much !
