Not too close as they'll tangle, mine's really filled out already from being about a foot tall when I planted it last year, it's about 3ft wide already.
To be honest, l'm not 100% certain, but l would say it wouldn't grow that much more. Bear in mind that it's being deadheaded all the time, and you can cut quite far back down the stem as opposed to the next set of buds, to keep it in check. My salvias in the back garden are grown in amongst other plants which keeps them tidy , but if they start to get a bit out of control which doesn't happen often, they are easy enough to cut back and reduce.
I would maybe buy just the one plant if you are not sure. They are easy enough to take cuttings from and that's a good thing to do anyway by way of insurance. I have a whole bed full of salvias in the front garden and they flower non stop until the first frosts
I received my amethyst lips today and was surprised that both labels that came with the plant say 50cm x 45cm. The website I bought it from said 100vm x 75cm as does the RHS website.
The label size would agree with your plant AnnieD. Should I disregard the website size?
To be honest, you won't really know until it gets in the ground, but that does sound a little on the large side to me. A website that l buy salvias from gives it a height of 2 to 3 feet (no spread). 2 feet is around 60cms l think, that is nearer to my personal experience. Another of my favourite suppliers says a maximum height of 80 to 90cms and a spread of 40 to 50 cms, so different again ! I think the RHS measurement is a bit generous, but as l say, if it gets too big you can trim it back
