Salvia amethyst lips

WildlifeloverWildlifelover Posts: 380
Would anyone have a pic of salvia amethyst lips so I can get a better idea of its size and growth type as I’m thinking of getting a couple. I find it hard sometimes to picture things in the garden just based on the description.

Is amethyst lips as hardy as hot lips?

Thanks.

I will see if l can find a photo,  l would say that it's not as vigorous as Hot Lips in my experience, but it's around the same height. Mine have survived, this would be the second year (l think, possibly 3rd), but we have had comparatively mild, dry Winters.

Sorry @Wildlifelover, l can't find one, but l would say the description on the Norfolk Herbs website is pretty good. (Other suppliers are available).

I do have "Cherry Lips" which is just starting to flower, but like the "Hotlips" in the front garden it's predominantly all one colour at the moment, and "Amethyst lips" seems to be slightly behind.

Amethyst lips has grown to about 90 cm in my garden and it’s suckering all over the place. I had to move it as it was too close to a rose and the rose wasn’t very happy. Mine has survived three winters so it seems pretty hardy.

What about the spread? I’m trying to picture it in the spaces I have in mind.

    Thanks.

Nice. Any idea of the spread in cm?

You need to give it about 50 - 70cm, depending on your gardening style. As I said, it spreads by suckering in my garden, but my soil is quite dry and thin and it’s probably enjoying that.

That’s great, thanks. My soil is pretty dry too and I have a spot which gets sun between 7am-3pm at the mo so hopefully it’ll do well there.

It should be happy then, good luck.

If I wanted to put two next to each other, how close should I plant them so that they will give the impression of being one plant? Thanks.
