Late summer/autumn interest to replace alliums

puschkiniapuschkinia Posts: 229
Hi everyone

I planted some alliums in a front garden bed alongside Erigeron. I'm really happy with how they look (though I want more alliums in there next year :D), but the alliums are starting to finish now.

Can anyone think of any plants that I could have in that bed that'll flower in summer/autumn? I'm looking for something tall-ish to take over from the alliums that have a similar look to them, and that will be able to grow through the erigon. I've been scouring through RHS but can't find anything that fits.

Thanks!

@puschkinia I have just planted some Verbascum. You could also try Verbena Hastata.

Ooh verbascum looks great, thanks @GardenerSuze! I've never seen these before. The verbascum violetta are lovely. And the firedance too. Do you think they'd be ok smothered by the erigon?

I don't think they will cope well with being smothered.

There is a later flowering allium called Summer Drummer, otherwise I can’t think of anything similarly globular offhand. Good old Verbena Bonariensis flowers until late and doesn’t take up too much space. For bulbs you could just pop in, Acidanthera or Liatris are late flowerers but it’s also getting a bit late to plant them now so you may not see much this year. You might have to dig out a little bit more grass behind the Erigeron whatever you plant to reduce competition and give them a bit more space to thrive.

    Nerine?

Nerine might work, as long as the bulbs get baked by the sun. Not sure how they would cope being smothered by other plants.

Not a lot of room there for other plants.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

If you want something floofy and purple (though not globular), perhaps some scabiosa?

I'd widen the border a bit and grow a row of Salvia nemorosa "Caradonna" - presuming your border gets sun and the soil is free draining, as enjoyed by your Erigeron!  Not globes on stalks but spires of purple enjoyed by bees, usually until October if you deadhead.
    Wirral. Sandy, free draining soil.
