Clematis care, who's right....

Label says late flowering, prune hard.
Internet search says spring flowering, don't prune....

They're definitely spring flowering - mine is more or less over. I've been going by the 'don't prune' advice (except the first year when I forgot and chopped it all down...)

    Label is wrong.

Ok, so prune after flowering, but just tidying up. Flowers on old wood.
    Thanks
Bad though for people who follow the label advice, as you think you should!

Ah, but which bit of the label is wrong? If it’s new and not in flower, it might not be Frances Rivis in which case the pruning advice and flowering times might be right 😊

Alpinas don't need pruned unless they need contained, or rejuvenated. One of mine is just starting to go over now, and the other is still in full flower, but they all flower at around April depending on where you are. :)

As @Nollie says though - it depends on which bit of the label is wrong. Is it flowering - or are there any seed heads?

'Frances Rivis' does not have ''petunia mauve flowers fading to pale pink''..  can you supply a photo of the foliage on your plant?..  the description sounds more like 'Comtesse de Bouchaud' actually.

    'Frances Rivis'..

Good point - I made the assumption that the name was correct but I shouldn't have.

The colour is certainly wrong for that variety.
