Two moths last night. Last year I was getting ten species at least at this time of year even when it was cooler weather. It's worrying but I hope it's just the cold spring that's slowed things down.
One of the two was this Yellow-barred Brindle though which hasn't been recorded from this borough before as far as I can see so that made it worthwhile at least.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
Another slow night with only six moths of six species. A couple of nice ones though and another new species for the garden which is this Glaucous Shears (Papestra biren). 253 species for the garden now and ticking up very slowly. Hopefully we'll get some double figure night time tempertures soon and things will pick up again.

A longhorn moth briefly visited the trap this evening. There's a few similar species but I don't think I've seen any of them before. It's gone so cold though that I'm tempted to just turn it off.

Its been a very slow start to the year. I hope it doesn't mean that last years hot temperatures wiped out the larvae, so less moths this year. Less moths this year, very few larvae and the birds will be struggling to find caterpillars for their babies.
I think it's just colder than usual at night. I had some good moths on Tuesday night after that longhorn. Not many but plenty of variety and generally big furry ones that don't mind the cold so much. My 3yr old was really taken with the Buff Tip and keeps asking me to go and find the stick moth for him to hold. We had a really friendly Poplar Hawkmoth too that spent ages walking all over his hands and I think he was hoping we'd keep that one.
