At the end of the day it all comes down to not using native plants... grasses included.
We're fortunate enough to live in Cascadia where it rains 2 out of 3 days, but I've seen dry gardens living on morning dew alone that would put green gardens to shame :D Sedum and thyme lawns are majorly underrated!

Good old " Right plant in a right place":

I am however genuinely annoyed whenever people preach how lawns in big cities should be used for growing food like it would solve food shortage problem and they don't need tending )). Yeah, you can grow a squash or two there maybe, as a single person in a city, few things that you like to eat if you're fortunate to not have it decimated by pest or blight)) but it's hardly a solution to claim you can feed a whole family on it. Such an obvious fantasy not backed up by amount of sweat it actually takes to get a good edible crop.
Oh and all that delicious exhaust aftertaste from growing things by heavy traffic road :D
And we all just love to live in neighborhoods that look like a parking lot behind warehouse )) Esthetics-shmestetics ... who needs it :D

I really like the way you have softened the path edges.

I can't imagine living on a housing development controlled by a HOA.  I suspect the people in charge are those with the loudest voices and opinions, not necessarily those who actually represent what the majority actually want.
It did make me laugh though that people in California are being paid to 'plant' plastic plants.  The US state which is so supposedly environmentally friendly that many types of car are banned because of their emissions!

It's the don't hang your washing out rules that amaze me. Fair enough don't hang your washing in the front garden but out the back??

Plenty of stupid rules everywhere. Did anyone else see that a Cornwall council banned daffodils in case someone ate them.

Our local council waits until the grass has just developed all the lovely wildflower buds before mowing it and leaving all the cut grass to blow away in the wind and cover the footpaths. They also love nothing better than attacking the hedges with a rotary mace, so that they don't develop any wild food for the birds and give very little cover for them in the winter. They do keep the local pitch and putt immaculate including watering when it's already raining and fertilising when the temperature is freezing.

The use of acronyms is becoming ever more prevalent and mysterious .  Some are quite simple, others take a bit of working out but could someone please explain HOA ?

A homeowner's association (HOA) is an organization in a subdivision, planned community, or condominium building that makes and enforces rules for the properties and residents.

Hi, no mow may sounds great but it's worth looking into it more deeply if you want to help wildlife. There has been discussions about how it can actually be harmful because all the creatures are attracted in before the grass is mown back down. Froglet's, grasshoppers, caterpillars etc hide in the long grass and have no where to go when the blades come. It's much better to just leave one area of grass long for the summer.
My brother mentioned he heard something on the radio about it today, so that's several bug experts who have viewed their reservations about it, so its definately worth reading more on the subject.
Ha ha ha, thanks for your consern but I don't need to "read more on the subject".
You don't need to worry about the wildlife in my garden.
For me No Mow May is an excuse for me do do even less to the grass, if that were possible. :D
