Hello, this is possibly wishful thinking but I’m on the look out for a show stopper climbing rose.

it’s going on a south facing wall and would really like it to be rust and black spot resistant.

It’s the only one I’m going to plant, if it could repeat flower that would be incredible.

do you guys have any suggestions or recommendations? I really can’t decide so any help is really appreciated, thank you.

first thoughts were

Rosa 'Zéphirine Drouhin'

I don't think Zéphirine Drouhin has a reputation for good health. How big a space should it happily cover? Any colour preference?

Gertrude Jekyll is often recommended for a show stopper by a front door. Good repeat, strong colour, great scent. But not that large for a wall.

If after something potentially bigger and more of a training challenge, perhaps Rosa Chinensis mutabilis. Definitely a show stopper and healthy.

That looks lovely. Pink or red would be the ideal but I can see yellow works really well. It’s a 3m by 2.5 m wall so would like to cover it.

Hav a look at Climbing Rose ‘Aloha’

Very healthy, repeat (almost constant) flowering, very fragrant … gorgeous colour.

  • I like New Dawn and I have a clematis Jackmanii growing in with it. It has been splendid, and I had to move it and it was still splendid.

For a red, wasn’t it you @Dovefromabove that posted a photo of an old, spectacular climbing Crimson Glory? If not, ignore me!

If it was a photo off the internet it might have been me @Nollie ... when I was a child Ma grew it up part of the soujth facing wall of the farmhouse when she had the old grapevines taken out.  It is well named, crimson and glorious when in full bloom ... can't remember whether it got the dreaded black spot or not.  It was certainly happy on a southfacing wall.

Ah, your story of your Ma’s sounds familiar @Dovefromabove. I don’t think it has the best rep for disease resistance but so much depends on climate.

I think Compassion is a beautiful rose for the wall of a house. It's strongly scented, hybrid tea shaped salmon pink flowers, dark healthy leaves. Quite vigorous, not for a bungalow! I had to leave mine behind when I moved.
