I'm sure that the majority of people in Russia the same as the people in Ukraine and those from most countries in the world want to live in the 21st century and not Putin's bandit country idolising Hitler's gangster Nazism.
Nothing wrong with hoping a country can defend itself from an invader. I wondered why Russia had invaded, and a discussion on another blog had a comment that made me think. Russia was paranoid about Ukraine joining NATO and having US missiles on its borders. Imagine Mexico came into the Russian fold, and Russia was about to base missiles in Mexico all along the US border. What would the US do? Like i said, it made me think, and maybe understand what Russia is doing.
@Balgay.Hill Being a German with parents that had to experience the war and - like many East-Germans - who have had a passion about Russia, they were shocked by what happened. I still hear my dad saying to me on that day when Putin invaded Ukraine,
"there is no excuse for war, no excuse".
When Putin told them that he intends to use nuclear bombs against Europe if he doesn't get his will, my mother cried on the phone. I went to Berlin to visit the family the week before last week, and while standing on the platform waiting for a train, a train from Poland arrived on the platform opposite. So many woman and children left the train with just a bag. That's all what was left from their life, a bag.
It was heart-breaking.

Thanks goodness we are in 2022, and the man with the iPhone will win the war and the man with his antique map of the USSR will lose it.
I agree that Balgay Hill has his finger on Putin’s thinking which is behind the invasion.
However just because I understand the reason, that doesn’t mean I think he is right to do what he is doing, and like us most of the Russians we know are horrified and appalled. Sadly they have older relatives in Russia who do not use much social media and believe Putin’s propaganda about the west being aggressively anti-Russian.
I sincerely hope you’re correct @Simone_in_Wiltshire, and that right will prevail … whatever happens the effects of this horror will be felt across Europe for decades to come. 😭

@Simone_in_Wiltshire I was in no way defending what Putin has done. I think it is terrible. The comment i left was from another blog that made me think about his reasoning, and why some Russians, probably older folk with Cold War thinking, supported him. I do think that NATO surrounding the border with missiles probably does feel threatening to a lot of Russians, and i wish both sides should talk to each other more.
@Balgay.Hill The NATO will always have a border with a country, and if a country is interested in Peace, then it will have no problem with that like Sweden, Austria and Switzerland. Putin started this war because he has already occupied a part of the Ukraine, and he wants to get back what the USSR used to be. The only thing that holds him back from getting the Baltic countries is that they are already in the NATO.
Unless you're a mind reader, you haven't a clue why Putin is doing what he's doing. And projecting your 'understandings' on Putin doesn't make your understandings right.
IF Putin didn't want NATO on his borders, then increasing the size of his 'domain' to ensure it butts up against NATO would seems slightly barking wouldn't it? And isn't that the key - barking? Which dictator in history hasn't had an over inflated ego and suffered from some form of personality disorder?
As for missiles - we're not in the 60s any more ICBMs are just that. You don't have to have missiles on a border.
So you can have an opinion ... everyone else can have an opinion, politicians and political commentators in the paper and on websites can have an opinion, but I cannot eh @steveTu?... I cannot even tell you what folk who live in Russia are saying to members of my family ... because I am wrong ... because you say so. That of course, is your opinion and worth as little as mine. However, because we live in a democracy we are both entitled to voice them.
