Still feeling a bit liverish after a three day alcohol and food fuelled 70th birthday celebration in Andalucia, but got some time today to catch up on all the lovely late season roses. Loads of rain in my absence, not so great for the housesitters, but the garden is looking pretty good!Â
Will post some rose and garden photos when I get a moment but meanwhile, for the benefit of the Smudge Club, here are some photos of the precious cargo picked up on the return journey. She’s already proving a handful!!
Beautiful monster!!!!
You aren't 70, Nollie?! Do you mean someone else's birthday? I had you pegged as 30s. Mind you, I also thought you were a lady for the longest time.
OMG Nollie what a cutie. How does Bill feel about her? And good luck
I am so happy I succumbed to getting Munstead Wood, such a good doer.
Chippendale is also great in a pot, these blooms are all on the plant right now showing its colour change which happens regardless of weather.Timeless Purple, Jingle Bells, Wildberry and OdysseyStrawberry HillGhislaine de FeligondeIn a sad development this beauty is being felled on Monday. It is an Ash harbouring Shaggy Bracket (Inonotus Hispidus) in its trunk core and has become dangerous. You may just be able to see daylight through a horizontal split in the lower left bough near the left edge of photo.I am cheering myself up with gaining a full-sun bed. Roses you can see there now have been pretty happy but I assume will improve.
I imagine I am not the only one who has been without rain for 3 weeks again, what we had then was good for water butts but the soil is bone dry.
You are not alone. I watered pots today. Haven't checked the ground but it must be very dry. If it is going to be like this, I am not buying any bulbs. There is no way I can dig.Â
Trees that need to come down is always a little bit sad . I have multi stemmed beech ( 3 trunks) that is becoming dangerous and is too close to the house. I really dread the day when it will be removed …Â
Ha, I’m nearer to 60 so not there yet WAMS, it was an old friend’s birthday bash. It’s a great shame my creaking body doesn’t match my youthful online image 😆  Bill is not entirely happy with the new pup, Tack, he growls a lot if she comes near or walks away in disgust. I’m sure things will settle down in time. So sorry about your tree, but every loss is a (rose) opportunity as they say.
@Discandied guilty as charged re Roses Loubert. All I’ve bought from them have established and grown strongly. They do cane and root prune hard for dispatch, so don’t be alarmed if a rather small box arrives!
@Imprevu I have a potted LEH in shade, it has only an hour or two of sun filtered through trees and does fine. Roald Dahl is also reported as shade tolerant.
@Lizzie27 Belales class it as a shrub rose, but I recall Marlorena grows her famous Armada up an obelisk to fabulous effect. The bloom shape may be more to your taste?Â
Very sorry for the massive MIA…a lot going on this year. I’ve hardly done much of anything in the garden but things keep trooping on despite my neglect.Â

The East Garden continues to look lush, not that you would know it but there are 11 roses in that bed battling with now rampant ‘fill in’ perennials. Love Song peeking out at the front and an invisible Mme. de Sévigné (bourbon) on the wigwam:

La Rose de Molinard, Dominique Loiseau and Astronomia on the opposite side of the same bed:

Good luck with the latest family addition!
